Fashion Corner - Timo Weiland

Fashion Corner is a category created to introduce different designers, their backgrounds, and their vision.

Today, we will talk about Timo Weiland! The brand itself consist of two designers, Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein. They met during a fashion internship. Timo Weiland always lean towards sketching painting, and photography during art. What's very admirable is that he majored in Economics, Spanish Literature  and Business management at Vanderbilt University before pursuing a career in fashion. His design partner, Alan Eckstein, studied the commercial aspect of the industry at Fashion Institute of Technology.

They started off in Pre-Fall 2009 with a collection of neckwear that were featured in Gossip Girl. Then they finally started off a full fashion collection in Spring 2010 that includes women and men's wear. 

Timo Weiland's inspiration is New York City. The people, the architecture, the atmosphere, the urban-ness. The design is well tailored, but has a modern twist to it. What separates them from the other brands is, according to Timo Weiland himself,  "All of the little details. We're not trying to be a watered-down Ralph Lauren. We focus on tailoring, and we have a modern twist."  The conservative cut out along with the creative prints is the perfect combination for working women that doesn't want to blend in to the crowd. 

In this upcoming season, the Pre-Fall 2013, Timo Weiland consists a lot of pattern and print that reminds me of nature and organic elements. The collection is coherent throughout due to the similar patterns and the similar silhouette. there are a couple silhouettes patterns this season for Timo Weiland. I especially like the second and sixth look of this collection because of how wearable it is. The general color scheme is deep forest green, turquoise  plum, tan, and black. There is also a hint of leopard print to spice up the collection (Look 8)!

For some people that doesn't think pattern is their thing, he also provides looks such as Look 1 that has very subtle patterns and very interesting construction (such as the skirt) to create the certain edginess.

Original - Aurora Inspired Mini-Collection

The complete Aurora Collection

Aurora has always been a phenomenon that amazes me. When I was doing a project in the Pre-college program of Rhode Island School of Design (Aka RISD), I decided to look up some photos of auroras to see if it can inspire me. It did. The way the light shines and curves that create such a beautiful and mystical light. So I decided to create a mini-collection that is inspired by these lights. 

All of the dresses have black as their base color to resemble the dark knight, than the different color chiffon interlace and curves with each other that resembles the lights in the sky. I also play with the sheerness of the fabric and sometimes single layer or double layer to show the different opacity an aurora has. 

I never got the chance to make it until November 2012, when Embodied Magazine graciously accept my designs and set up a fashion shoot for the magazine. Embodied Magazine is a Gallatin based fashion magazine that is just starting up. It hopes to reach the same quality as other fashion magazines, but advocate healthy body image and self love.

This is the texture pattern collage collection New York Fashion Week! If you want to be colorful instead of black and white, here is a great alternative! Last season is all about color-blocks, but this season is about patterns and how contrasting patterns can go together. If you think you get what it takes to pull it off, give it a shot!!

This is the bottoms and accessories board. I think I would like to include some black skirts and fashion tights also. The contrast looks are more street, edgy, and slightly hipster.

Contrast Top NYFW 2013

This is my New York Fashion Week 2013 Top Mood board, the contrast top section. It is the preliminary step to my styling shoot that would happen in a couple of weeks.

This season, there are a couple of looks that are most prominent: Contrast tops, Suits, Ruffles, colorful collage and Sheer/Veil Looks. This is the first of many updates I would make for this awesome time of the year!

Fashion in the Future… Will I want to wear that?

In the 21st century, technology is every where. The past 3~5 years are the peak of growth in our technology. Our phones went from Motorola Razor as the coolest thing, to multiple smart phones (iPhones or Androids). Our computers and laptops got progressively smaller and lighter and easier to move around with. The future is ahead of us and we can see the great influence of technology in our social life.

But the improvements of technology doesn’t stop there! Our fashion industry also integrated technology into their designs in the most creative, innovative, and ridiculous way possible!

They are called “wearable technology”, and they are not just futuristic designs with shiny fabrics and lady gaga like silhouette (AKA Smart Clothing), but they actually including bluetooth, electricity, chemicals, and biology. Many designers collaborated with technological companies such as Sony or DuPont. The designs are so outrages that I’m sure you will have a good laugh.

The trend of the fashion industry suggested that the common brands such as Nike, Adidas, Timberland, Columbia will start adopting the technique of “wearable technology” and essentially lead the break through of wearable technology. Adidas already released a pair of running shoes last year called adidas_1 footwear. “It is a running shoe with an embedded microchip that monitors the terrain underfoot and accordingly adjusts the level of shock absorption provided by the shoe’s heel.” (According to Forbes.com)

The following is some examples of “Wearable Technology”.

France Telecom

France Telecom created a flexible screen to project LED images that you can simply slide into your bag or under some specific shirt. The Bluetooth allows the wearer to project any image or message she wants from her paired phone. the General Packet Packet Radio Service (GPRS) allows the wearer to connect to the internet. The device itself is create a clothing that can truly capture the spirit of “Fashion is to express one’s personality”. The image is an effective way to express one’s individuality.

According to the website, the user can hug without actually hugging each other! How they achieve this is the shirt sends signal to the user’s phone via bluetooth, and as the application encode the hug and send to the recipient of the hug, the bluetooth on the recipient’s phone then alert the recipient’s hug shirt to react and virtually sending a “text  message hug” to one another. “Sending hugs is as easy as sending an SMS and you will be able to send hugs while you are on the move, in the same way and to the same places you are able to make phone calls”

epiSkin is a wearable jewelry that uses biological technology to create sculptures that people can wear.They are epithelia cells which grow to create artificial skin. The cells are grown into designed forms by the artists. The creation of this jewelry involves biological technology, computer generated form technology, and human tissue culturing.

These are the few examples of wearable technology. These designs are very impressive and important since it signifies the possibility of what the future can hold. There are many more examples as wearable technology and behold the incredibly creative and futuristic designs!

As impressive these designs are, it does make me wonder though: will I EVER want to wear them?

Jeremy Scott - Crazy and Outrageous

Started in 1997, Jeremy Scott’s eponymous line is an example of lowbrow culture transformed into high art. Often more conceptual than wearable, the designs change drastically every season with the evolution of Scott’s whimsy. I normally don't know any designers. Of course I know all of those big shots such as Chanel, Gucci, Prada, etc. Even when I'm interested in being a fashion designer, staying on top of the fashion trend isn't my first priority. For me, I believe that each of us have our own sense of fashion and style that should not be affect too much by other designers. Even though it is healthy to look at other examples and consider the ideas and see what works and what doesn't, I still normally keep away from magazines and fashion runway shows to keep my originality.

However, when I first got out of my way to understand a designer, it was Jeremy Scott. I knew him over a group of singers -- 2NE1. I wrote once about them on my blog, and they love to wear what Jeremy Scott designs. Then I slowly realize how creative those garments the girls had on are. I did some of my research and realize that they were wearing Jeremy Scott. His designs are outrageous and crazzy with insane colors and concepts. They are more conceptual rather than wearable, but when put together well it can look amazing and eye catching. What first caught my attention was their shoes.

He collaborated with Adidas, and created many casual items that was very .... outrageous. His ideas were so different from the others it is difficult to not notice. Here are a couple examples of what he designed that I think is very impressive.

He created a couple wing shoes that evolved over time with differnt colors. If you look at the homepage of the adidas online shop, those shoes will definatedly catch the shoppers eyes. This pair of shoes will catch the attention from everyone for sure. This is one of my favorite designs. He has other shoes designs including Mickey Tongue's shoes, Flame (instead of wings) shoes, teddybear tongue shoes, license plate tongue shoes, etc.His other clothes colloboration with Adidas were also very impressive.

Now getting into his mainline, he created many big shirts that can act like a baggy t-shirt, or a dress.His most recent collection is the Fall 2011. And OMG, he blew my mind again. His theme this time is very colorful colors (not really), but there are a couple that blew my mind. Here are a couple examples that I can totally see many celebrities, such as 2NE1, would wear.

Don't know about you, but I think those are pretty bad ass.
